Practically, a relative may want to look into some type of paid assistant to provide care in the elderly parent's home. This may take away the tension associated with family members providing physical care. From a legal planning perspective, if the parent still is mentally competent, they may want to grant some trusted third party a Power of Attorney to handle administrative/financial matters and/or a Health Care POA to handle health care decisions. If a parent is disabled and unable to make decisions on their own, the law in each state allows for guardianship of a disabled person, but you would need to check the laws of the state where they reside for applicable guardianship procedures.
