A simple idea is not usually patentable. Example making fuel out of waste. The idea is not patentable. A process for doing it well may be patentable. If it is something that is mechanical, a process, or software related it may be protected by patent.

To protect the idea in terms of people who see it or work on it for you, you need a confidentiality agreement and a work for hire agreement with respect to anyone doing work on the idea for you.
