Legal Question in Technology Law in Massachusetts

internet usage liability

Hello,

I manage the internet account for me and my 2 roommates (the account is in my name, I pay the bills). Though I have no reason to suspect this would happen, could I theoretically be held liable, whether criminally or civilly, for activity my roommates do over the internet without my knowledge or consent? Would it depend on the activity?

Thank you.

Re: internet usage liability

If your account is used for illegal activity, you can be held liable. You will have to defend yourself by proving your roommates did something wrong. While it is ok for them to have access through your account, I would suggest that they have to use a separate account identification, so that if they do something wrong they will be liable for it.
