Legal Question in Criminal Law in Massachusetts

Trespassing, how much trouble am I in?

I was coming out of a park and to get to the parking lot quicker I cut through a section of the park that had posted notices not to pass through there. I did. The state police stoped me in the parking lot and informed me that I will be getting a summnos in the mail. My questions is, in how much trouble am I in? Do I need to hire a lawyer or is this like a trafic speeding ticket violation? Thanks.

I would wait until you receive the summons to find out exactly with what you have been charged and therefore to be able to know the possible penalities. Whether you are in trouble depends upon many factors including whether you have a prior criminal record, the facts and circumstances of the new case and how the police or owners of the property feel about the case. It is always beneficial to have a lawyer who knows that system and will be able to get you the best disposition on the case. When you get the summons and complaint, look for the section of the law under which you are being charged.

Probably trespassing. Not too serious, but it is a criminal charge and you should get yourself a lawyer.

As to the prognosis: it depends on whether you

have a criminal record
