does the employer pay for the medical and dental insurance while on a family medical leave and ff so for how long?

Without more details about the situation, I have to say, it depends. Was the employer paying for benefits prior to the FMLA leave, and were the benefits provided under a group plan?

In general, an employer is required to maintain coverage under a group health plan benefits at the same level as would have been provided if the employee had been continuously employed during the FMLA leave period. But keep in mind that any premiums paid by the employee prior to the leave must continue to be paid during leave (i.e. the deductions for medical/dental that you see in your paycheck).
