in the state of massachusetts can an executor of a will appoint his wife to take his place?

The succession of executors is determined by the will. If the will allows an executor to name his successor then he can name his wife.

I agree with Attorney Pransky. If the will does not provide for a successor, the wife could petition the court to be appointed. She would have to have the assent of the heirs and interested parties or would have to provide notice to all heirs and interested parties. The husband would have to assent and to resign his appointment.
