Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Is my future ex-husband entitled to an inheritance?

I was served divorce papers the first week of Oct. Two weeks later my grandmother died and I recently found out I will be receiving a large amount of money. My divorce will not be final until April. Is my husband entitled to any of the money(If I get it before the divorce is final? After?)?

Generally, no. Your inheritance will be considered separate property. There are some limited exceptions, though, but there is not enough room here to explain in this email. You should have your current lawyer explain this to you. And if you have no lawyer, you should get one immediately.

You have nothing to worry about. Even if you received the money during the marriage, if you do not co-mingle your assets with assets that are inherited, it is highly unlikely that your husband would get a piece. Get a good lawyer to make sure. William S. Stern

Only your attorney will know enough about the particulars of your case to accurately answer your question. I encourage you to disclose everything to your attorney and your spouse. An experienced attorney should be able to protect your large inheritence. For more information go to:
