Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

Receiving pay after quitting

In late June, I quit my job as an analyst to attend college full-time. While there, I had my paychecks directly deposited into my checking account. I left the company on good terms, but since then, they have continued to pay me my regular salary by directly depositing it into my account every two weeks. Today I received a letter from the company telling me they realized they had made a mistake, had reversed the last payment into my account, and they are now demanding that I pay them back the over $3000 that they had mistakenly paid me. Am I required, by law, to pay them back even though I never signed a paystub and deposited the money into my account? If not, what do I need to do?

I appreciate any help you can provide

Re: Receiving pay after quitting

Yes, you must pay them back. The money is not yours. Call them to negotiate a payment plan or other terms. Make sure your W-2 at the end of the year only records payment for hours actually worked.
