Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

tenant rights regarding lease

I have a lease that ends on 7/14/07, I am in the process of purchasing a condo and have a closing date of 6/8/07. A month ago I advised my landlord that I am purchasing a home and will not be renewing my lease, she advised that she would see if she could find someone to move in prior to 7/14/07. Yesterday she called me and advised that she had signed a new tenant to move in on 7/1/07 and wanted to know when I could move out. They want me out prior to 7/1/07 so they can clean carpets and make any repairs. I told her I could see if I could do that but I would expect to be prorated for the time in June that I will not occupy the premises. They will not do that and are also asking me to pay the utilities until 6/30/07 when I am no longer there. Legally I believe I have the right to stay here until my lease agreement is up and if they want me to leave early I should be prorated. What are my legal rights and should my landlord have gone and released my place prior to my original lease agreement?

Re: tenant rights regarding lease

If your lease doesn't expire until 7/14, and you told them you don't want to leave early, then you don't have to. They are simply asking you to leave early to help them out - and probably because the new tenant is putting pressure on them to get in there as quickly as possible.

And if you leave early as a favor to them, GET IT IN WRITING that they will not charge you rent or utilities after you move out.

You are correct about your rights. They are trying to push you around.

If you need assistance or need a letter written to them to get it straightened out, please contact me at 248.644.8771. Thanks and good luck.
