Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

Court ordered Child Therapy

The court/mediator requires my 9 year old son see a counselor. After much pushing of the custodial parent, my ex finally agreed I (I have legal joint) would secure a weekend therapist for our son so he would not miss any school. After much searching, I finally found one that has expertise in blended and multicultural kids. Even after I told my ex this though, she took my child anyways to see a different therapist she had found. I do not want my son to see this therapist as I already found one for him after much searching, and in the past my ex has taken my son only to see a therapist once before a court hearing etc, and never again. It does my son more harm then good. Am I in my legal right to forbid her to take him to this therapist, and just take him to see the one I chose? Or do we need a mediator/court hearing to work this out because my ex refuses to listen to me? I just want what is best for my kid--the parenting issues I have had for the last 9 years with his mother had really taken its toll on him.

Neither party has the right to choose the therapist. If you share legal custody, it is a joint decision. I would suggest that you choose a third therapist that BOTH may agree upon rather than each of you doing your research separately and trying to force thier will and therapist on the other.

I would take the issue back to the mediator.
