why is a separation more exspensive, who usually get the kids? what if one of the adults has mental health. does it automadicly go to the other adult?

A legal separation is not more or less expensive than a divorce. The court makes custody decisions based on a "best interests of the child" standard. Mental health is certainly a factor in custody determinations.
