Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Nebraska

25 Year Old Student Loan Debt

My wife never signed any student loan docs when she first went to college 25 years ago and the signature used was unknowingly forged by her mother. She was also a minor at the time. After years of chasing away the debt collectors we now have the Dept of Education calling. We want to resolve this issue even if it means paying it w/o interest - the principal amount is only $5K but the interest is about $12K. What options does she have? Thanks!

This isn't clicking for me. Your wife's mother wouldn't have needed to forge your wife's name since she was a minor and would have needed a parent co-signor to take the student loan anyway. Did your wife receive the loan proceeds (or benefits of it) or are you saying that these loans were in fact for her mother's education or other use? Have you told the Dept of Ed that your wife never signed a loan application?
