I'm setting up a web site and need a DBA for it. I have that picked out but do I have to register it with the state ( NH ) to have people write checks using my web name?

Re: Business Names

You have a number of mixed issues here. Web sites are registered with a Domain Name Service. The State of New Hampshire permits you to create a business entity. The reason you would likely use a business entity (LLC, corporation, etc.) is to shield your personal assets from liability for errors made by the business. The third issue is that of banking regulations. You'll need a bank account and I expect that the bank will require a formal business entity or that the account be in your personal name.

I suggest that meeting with an attorney to review all of your needs would be an appropriate first step toward creating a viable business structure.
