Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

help

my altercation was between me and another driver who happend to be indian, instead of harming the person my fit of rage i took his head draping. i was never arrested for this incident, i turned my self in due to guilt, returend what was taken and even appologized. i do have a long rap sheet and now the court has decided to prosecute for 3rd degree theft of a person and currently i am being represented by a public defender and am looking at 275 time and 300 hours of comunity service. i had spoken with a lawyer but i cannot afford his services, the most i could afford is 1,500. i am the soul provider for my wife and daughter i cant go to jail... what do i do?
