Prior to presenting the matter to a grand jury or taking other action a preindictment conference is scheduled so that the defendant's attorney and the prosecutor can discuss resolving the case. I would need to know whtyou are charged with before I could give you a complete answer, but in general the pre-indictment conference is where you are offered a plea deal to resolve the case before it is sent to the grand jury for indictment. No matter what, if the case was serious enough to be sent up to the superior court then you definitely need a lawyer to represent you.
