Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

My employer told me for the first time ever today that he does not feel I am performing optimally in my position and asked me to resign. I'm assuming to avoid paying unemployment. Is this legal?

Prior to today, I had been told by co-workers I was performing very well. I believe he is asking me to resign because he does not personally like me.

Tell him you will not resign, and want to keep working there. Good luck, this does not sound good.
