Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey
My sister and I own property in NJ as joint tenants in common with rights of survivorship. She owes back taxes on the property, as well as, refuses to maintain the property. Can I legally force her to pay her share of the property taxes, as well as, to do necessary maintenance on the property?

As co-owner you can either pay what's needed and then get a credit when the property is sold, or you can file a lawsuit against her for either partition or contribution. First, without knowing all the facts, I would just talk to her or have an attorney write a letter to her.

I am handling one like this right now, Aunt will not pay her share of taxes and upkeep, lives in the downstairs unit, my client owns the upstairs of the 2 family house. If she does not pay, we go to court and force her to pay.
