debt of deceased joint tenant

my mother and i have joint checking accnt mother passed away& got medicaid county says they have preferred claim to leftover amount being that accnt is mine do i have to pay county

The law is that a joint account is owned 50/50 by both parties. If one dies, the other takes it all, by law. THey may have a claim, but as far as I am concerned, the joint account is no longer joint, its yours 100%. They have to find money somewhere else.
