deceased spouse's medical bills

My husband recently died. Am I responsible for his hospital and medical bills?

If your husband had a will, then the executor of his estate must ensure that his debts are paid to the extent that there are assets with which to pay them. If he did not have a will, then you (or another relative) may have to commence a proceeding to be appointed as administrator of his estate and have the debts paid from the estate assets. If your husband had no assets, or all of his assets were transferred directly to you, e.g. joint ownership of a house or bank account, then the answer to your question is, generally, no - you personally are not liable for his debts.
