Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Money taken from joint back account - query

My boyfriend owed money that went to collections. A lawyer (Mel S Harris) took $3K from 2 of his bank accounts but my boyfriend was able to settle the dispute and arrange repayment of his debt.

I noticed this morning that $3K and $100 in ''Legal Fees'' has been taken from MY savings account which was recently turned into a joint savings account with my boyfriend's name on it. The money in the account is entirely mine and was received as inheritance last year. It has nothing to do with my Boyfriend and besides, he is already paying these people back.

Are they legally allowed to take money from a joint bank account? Can I sue these people? Seems like they are making people's lives miserable and I for one have never owed money in my life. I'm extremely careful about such things.
