For what reasons would an attorney advise a parent to decline child visitation until custody court date?

If your attorney has given you this advice and you don't understand why, I recommend you ask him or her thisquestion. The answer to that question is fact specific and you would hav to ask your attorney why that is? Sometimes the custodial parent is volatile and counsel will act to protect their client by advising them not to visit unless there is a court order in place that can be enforce through the courts and police. This is usually good advice where a custodial parent may have a history of substance abuse or mental health issues.
