Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My husband and i are getting a divorce. I will be taking over paying the life insurance that insures him. I will be the owner and the beneficiary. In the event that i pass away, our child would inherit the money. Does that mean my ex-husband who has joint custody of our child would control this money? In the event that he also passes away, who inherits this money if no guardian is set up for the child? I was told by default it would be the paternal grandparents?

You might discuss this concern with your divorce attorney or even a representative from the life insurance company. I do believe a lot depends on what age the child is at the time of death.
