Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

fired because of religion

I was fired because I lied to my boss about needing a day off.

My co worker accused me of lying about needing Friday and Saturday off, when I told her I needed them off for religious reasons. She said that I was just saying that to get out of work.

My boss would schedule me for Friday and Saturdays anyway, and I told him that I couldn't work those days.

My co worker basically told me I was fired by the manager because I kept lying about needing Friday and Saturday's off, and she told my dad I was trying to play the religion card.

Do I have a case for a suit?

Re: fired because of religion

Possibly, if your request for time off was due to a bonafide religious belief or practice. It is not permissible for an employer to inquire about the specifics of your practice but they can inquire as to the sincerity of your belief. If you like I'd be happy to discuss this with you, I have handled similar cases to yours.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.
