Legal Question in Personal Injury in New York

Waiver and Release of Liability

My son is going to an away-from-home sports camp. We have been given a ''Waiver and Release of Liability'' to sign. It stipulates that we assume all risks and hold the releasee harmless even if ''arising from the negligence of the releasees . . . .'' I thought that negligence was always grounds for a lawsuit. Is this legal? I feel that I am signing my son's life away.
