Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

Hello,

My boyfriend was just pulled over for a tail light being out and was arrested on the spot for his license being suspended. (He currently has 3 suspensions) I'm really worried about him, what is going to happen?

Thank you

He is probably charged with a violation of VTL 511 for the license suspensions, which is a misdemeanor. In my experience, most judges do not keep a person in jail for driving with a suspended license, but your boyfriend has 3! There might also be a small bail. If he clears up all the suspensions, it is possible that the prosecutor offers a plea to a reduced charge of VTL 509, which is a violation and not a crime. If the tail light is fixed within 24 hours of the ticket, it should be dismissed. Tell your bf, no driving with a suspended license!

Good luck!
