death + life insurance

my husband died unexpectedly. we were seperate and am not sure if he had term life insurace (he used to) Is there a time frame to put in a claim?someone told me only 30 days from death) I am trying to find out if he had it but there is no will and am having trouble finding his personal papers. He doesn't own anything and this would help my kids and I tremdously. Please help!!

There is no time limit.

You may want to start an administration proceeding with the Surrogate's Court. As the administrator of the estate, you would be entitled to his bank records, safte deposit box, etc. The bank records may indicate that he made payments to an insurance company.
