Legal Question in Workers Comp in New York

Workmans Comp Settlement

I was told that when your given a award settlement from workmans comp the money is deducted from what you already received from payments given to you. So if I received say $6,000.00 in payments and I was awarded $10,000.00 for a settlement the $6,000.00 in payments is deducted? Is this true

Generally, the lump sum payment is in lieu of FUTURE payments, not for past payments.
