Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

can all defendeants request a jury trial
My son who is 16 has been charged with 2nd degree criminal trespassing. I feel as though we are being railroaded to admit to guilt. My question is , just who can request a jury trial? I feel that my son will get a better outcome than dealing with just a judge.

Misdemeanor charges are heard by a judge in District Court. No jury trials in District Court.

If you lost in District Court, you could appeal and get a new trial in Superior Court.
