Legal Question in Real Estate Law in North Carolina

I was told that I have a new landlord on 8-21-09. I gave a written notice to my previous landlord.. whom is no longer the owner of the property I live in... that I was moving out by sept 1,2009. Who is responsible for paying a deposit. The new landlord or the old landlord?

If we are talking about a residential lease, typically the new Landlord will be responsible. Under the Tenant Security Deposit Act, the old landlord has 30 days to either transfer the money to the new landlord or to you. The landlord is supposed to notify you as well. Either way, after your tenancy is up, you are entitled to a statement regarding any deductions from the security deposit for damages and the balance within 30 days after the end of the lease. If you do not receive this, then you may want to contact an attorney at that time.
