Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Dakota

laws about publishing debt

Our city has a problem with people not paying their utility bills on time, they are threatening to publish a list of people who's utility bills are delinquent in the local newspaper. Is that legal? Aren't there privacy issues with publishing someone's debt. If I went to city hall and asked to see a list of the people who are deliquent they would refuse on privacy issues, how can they publish it in the newspaper? Thank You very much for your insite.

Sincerely,

Dan Suhr

Re: laws about publishing debt

Sounds legal, as long as they accurately report it. Cities anbd counties routinely publish delinquent taxpayer notices.
