Joint checking account

My mother-in-law has a lot of credit card debt. My wife and I have our names on her checking account form which her accounts are drawn. If something would happen to her are we responsible for her debt?

If she passed away her estate would be responsible for the debt. Any assets that she left behind could be used to pay off the debt. This includes money that she put into the joint checking account.
