You can sue for defamation, but unless you suffered significant injuries, like losing your job or being thrown out of school, most lawyers will not take such a case on a contingent basis, and will require a significant retainer, filing fees and other costs such as court reporter fees for depositions. You should be aware that the statute of limitations in PA is only 1 year from the date the false statements were made. Also, you will have to have witnesses willing to testify as to who is spreading these rumors. There are probably other things you can do, like get a restraining order against the person spreading the rumors, but that would also require a lawyer and would be very expensive.
