Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Pennsylvania

Delinquent Property Tax

I bought the property next to my property in 1991. I received a notice dated May 19, 2004, that a company has purchased certain real estate taxes on the purchased property. The notice states that school district taxes are owed on the purchased property for 1990. In 1990, the purchased property was owned by the Redevelopment Authority of my city. When I purchased the property in 1991, no mention was made of a tax lien being on the property. Am I liable for paying this tax on the purchased property even though I did not own it at the time?

Re: Delinquent Property Tax

There are a few things you should do. First, if you had title insurance, you should pull out your policy and call the underwriter. It is likely that you have coverage on this issue. If you did not have title insurance, it still sounds like you may have a chance of avoiding payment. Usually, when the redevelopment authority owns property, the taxes are abated for the period of their ownership. You may need an attorney to deal with the City and RDA in that case.
