Child support law in Puerto Rico requires that you pay it until the child is 21. However, if the child continues to study you will have to pay child support until he graduates. There is no case law going beyond bachelor's degree, however, there is no time limit for university studies either.

From the facts narrated, I do not think you can have the case transferred.

Re: Child support stop at what age in Puerto Rico??

If the child support order originated in Puerto Rico, the other lawyer's advice controls. If the case originated in Virginia different law controls. In Virginia you are only responsible for child support until age 18 or 19 if still enrolled as a full time high school student and living with his custodial parent. At age 18 (or after) you must petition the court to stop the support.

In either case I do not think you can transfer the case to Virginia. The Uniform Support laws require the home Court to be where the child resides. Virginia Department of Child Support Enforcement is only a collection agency empowered to bring you to a local Virginia Court to enforce the original Court's orders.

Good luck.
