Legal Question in Personal Injury in South Carolina

Injury/college campus sports facility

What responsibility does a unversity have to athletes (both their own and guests athletes) playing a competition and become injured from an unsafe object within a few feet of the actual playing field? My child received injuries which could have been very serious or even fatal, as a result of hitting an object placed within approximately 5 feet of a (recreational field). The sport he plays is a club sport and was playing other club teams at the time of injury. We are unsure if we should sue the university for all medical expenses, or just our out-of-pocket expenses, plus his pain and suffering and loss of practice and competing time. Is there additional areas in which a suit could be filed? Thank you for your prompt reply.

If this is a state university, you need to contact a S.C. lawyer asap as there may be notice deadlines.
