Legal Question in Immigration Law in South Dakota

Bar Exam and Optional Practical Training

I am a Canadian Citizen. I will graduate from Law School in May 2004. I will write the Bar Exam in SD in July 2004. I have accepted a clerkship beginning Aug. 2004 for twelve months. Do I have to leave the country after I graduate in May and then come back and take the Bar Exam and begin my clerksip using OPT, or is there some way I can remain in the U.S. without using part of my 12 month OPT period until I begin my job in August.

Thank you.

Re: Bar Exam and Optional Practical Training

There is a 2 month period where you are allowed to stay in the U.S. after your graduation date even w/o the OPT. Make sure you apply for the work card ahead of time, though, asking for it to start in July '04.
