Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Courses

I am getting divorced in Burnet County, Texas. We waiting our 60 days (by the way we filed for divorce ourselves no attorney). Went to set court date, and we're told that we have to take a Putting Kids First Course. We we're never told anything about this when we filed. (by the way been seperated for 4yrs.) Is there anyway to get around this?

Re: Courses

Well, you just learned why most people with a legal problem hire an attorney.

The people that took your documents when you file a divorce are clerks and they are not allowed to practice law without a license in Texas.

No one is obligated to inform you on what you need to finalize a divorce.

You can ask the Judge's staff if he/she will waive the course.

I probably already know the answer -- but you can always ask.

I would get a copy of the local rules (if your county has a set of local rules) and read them thoroughly.

You might also want to check your local law library for other information that you might need.

Good luck!
