Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

Homestead Exemption

i recieved a letter in the mail stating that i was eligible for a homestead exemption and that this CPA would handle it for me and all was required was she would get half of the claim. Well, me being new to home ownership, i figured what the hey!..Get me some money. Well, i received the check and assumed she got her half and i got mine. Well now she is harrassing me saying she needs her half. almost 400 dollars. i called the local appraisal office and they informed me it was a scam. all that is required to receive the exempion is a form from them.. and the form is free and send it in and the money is yours.. so she is scamming people by making them think she is really doing some work to get you your money for you....they told me not to worry about it and dont pay her. well they are now calling claiming i owe and if dont set up a payment plan that legal will get involved and i will be liable for court costs as well.... i find this outrageous as all it cost was a stamp to get me my money. so for 35 cents worth of work, she wants almost 400 dollars. this has scam written all over it...what is my legal advice you are willing to give me here...thank you ... Jerry
