Legal Question in Employment Law in Utah

Employee lost my information including SSN and displaced me

I worked for a large company in Utah for 6 years. In February 2007 I and a number of other current and former employees received a letter that my information including SSN was on a laptop stolen from another company who did a consuting work for the employer. In this letter it stated that the laptop was stolen two months ago. The next day after I got this letter there was an announcement about force reduction and only I was displaced from my department, even though I had a good performance for 6 years, including bonuses, etc. It looked like a very strange coincidence and at the same time my VP really wanted me to take the package which would involve signing papers. I got an offer for another job with a different company a few days later and gave my two weeks notice, so I didn't take the package and didn't sign anything. Could I sue them for giving my information to a third party without my consent, negligence, not informing me in a timely manner about the sutiation and possibley displacing me?

You could, but you may not recovery much money unless you can prove actual damages. Since you quit you have no recourse for lost wagers. Unless your ID get hijacked, you probably do not have damages there either.
