Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Collection attempts for a check I stopped payment on due to negligence

I stopped payment on a check to a car dealership for the work they did, after giving them 3 attempts to rectify the damages they caused. The bank initially paid it, but manually went in and rejected the check as a 'refer to maker'. The check then went through again (even though it shouldn't have been allowed) and was returned.

Then Certegy, the check collection people are sending me demand letters. I have contacted them several times, explained the situation and faxes as well as mailed them the documentation. They refuse to accept it and are blocking my check writing privliges as well as threatening legal action.

The car dealership won't do anything to rectify the damage they caused as they already have the funds. Please let me know what my rights are.

Thank you.

What are the check collection folks demanding if the check has already been paid?

The matter of the unsatisfactory car repair should be first referred to the local consumer affairs agency, and if that produces no results, your next stop, most probably, should be small claims court.
