Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Minimum about of money to sue for?

Is there a minimum amount of money a person can sue you for? Can a person sue you for $80 that they gave you 6 months prior and told you that you didn't have to pay back? There is no evidence that the money was given other than internet conversations and a $20 money order sent to the person threatening to sue.

Re: Minimum about of money to sue for?

Certainly, one could sue in small claims court for an $80 debt allegedly owed. However, it would cost around $40 to file the case in most Virginia jurisdictions and, perhaps, another $12 or so to have the papers served. And, then when the plaintiff's time is factored into the cost equation, one

might well conclude that this particular litigation might well not be worth it.
