Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

My mother recently died. All life insurance policies have designated beneficiaries. Also, she is named on the house along with her husband. There are no other known assets in her name outside of a $700 bank account. Are we responsible for paying her outstanding medical and credit card bills or can we contact the company to have them written off? Could they take the house? Should her name be taken off the house before we notify these companies?

No, you are not responsible for paying your deceased mother's legitimate debts

but her estate is. If her spouse is also deceased, then the house would be

part of her estate which would be the responsibility of the executor or administrator of the estate to dispose of in order to pay the legitimate debts of your mother's creditors.
