Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Hey I was charged with a class 4 misdemeanor for haveing sex with a 14 year old and I'm 17 we are exactly 2 years 8 months and 20 days age diffrence and also I would like to add that she ask me to sleep with her over the corse of 6 months To sleep with her and one day I agreed. basicaly i am just being charged for sleeping with her when she is under the age of concent. I know a class 4 misdemeanor is a maximum of a $250 but i would like to know what other punishment I may have. And could I be a "sex offender" and have It on my record? Please let me know I have court June 2nd and I'm very worried that this may be more serious than it sounds.

So if I understand, you are being charged under 18.2-63(B)

on the ground that the consenting girl was 14, the boy was 17, and the difference in age was less than 3 years

I would never suggest that any misdemeanor is not serious. A misdemeanor can have many other consequences in the future, including with employment, etc.

With any misdemeanor, I think it is always worth hiring an attorney to try to defeat the charges altogether, rarther than having them on your record.

However, at 17, you will probably be tried as a minor in Juvenile and Domestic Relations court (JDR) which may keep your conviction confidentiall.

Also, you would not need to be on the sex offender list for a FIRST offense (though you would for a second offense):
