Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I live in va. and have retained a lawyer for custody of my two kids and my divorce. When i meet with him he told me it would be 4,000 dollars to take the case. after a few months the lawyer asked me to pay an additional 888, because he said he didn't realize it would be this in depth. I paid him the additional money. Now a month later he has sent me an itemized bill for 487.50 for time he spent on case. Can he do this since he already requested the extra money.

Would seem to depend upon what the fee agreement says about how

much the attorney is to be paid and under what circumstances. (Hopefully, you

do have one.)
