Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

is this even legal?

a girl friend and i moved into together. both names on rental contract. contract states that if one party does not pay half of rent, other half must. i moved out after 2 months because of her drug problem and costing me to pay full months rent causing me money problems. i couldnt get off lease because she refuse to sign me off. her mother now gives her my 1/2 of rent and she has a roommate, which is illegal unless she signs me off, but i can't prove theres a roommate because the locks have been changed, at her request. now shes suing me for , get this, not the rest of the years rent but 1/2 of it. she signed the contract stating that she was legally inclined to pay it if i didnt. so can she sue me? i just want off this contract. i dont even have keys to the place let alone a room in which someones living in. shes breaking all rules, and im trying to do whats best, but i can besued??? don't understand

Why, of course, you can be sued (as almost anyone can for almost anything.) However, whether your former girlfriend can previal in her suit, is obviously quite another matter, and if you present an effective defense when the matter comes to trial, it is unlikely that she will do so.

You should bear in bind, however, that only the landlord named in the lease agreement would have the power to release you from that contract and not your ex girlfriend.
