can u sue a person that lives in another state?

i had a lawyer represent me for a dui case in va. at the time i was a va resident. i paid all the fees required to him and moved to md. i no longer am a va resident and up to this very day i receive letters from this lawyer saying that i owe him two hundred and fifty dollars for court and that he wants to sue me...can he sue me if i no longer reside in va?

Sure, but he'd probably have to go to Maryland to file his claim there to have any chance of success.
