Legal Question in Insurance Law in Virginia

I have never lived out east. I moved into a rental home, and was told the maintenance manager would go over all of the systems with me. Traveling to another state for 5 days I turned off the homes heat inorder to save the energy. A pipe broke and flooded the basement. The homeowners insurance paid for the damage. The insurance company paid the claim and is now holding me accountable for $18,000. Can I fight this?

Without knowing the specific provisions of your policy as to what it covers and

what it excludes from coverage and how your contributory actions may factor into the "liability equation", so to speak, it would be difficult to assess your chances of success in contesting the insurance carrier's suit (in my opinion).
