Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Legal Division of Matital Assets

My wife and I can't agree on how to spend our money in retirement.

Can we legaly divide our assets so that we are solely responsible for our own assets, incomes, exspenses, spending, ect., without divorceing each other?

Does this require the services of an attorney or are forms available for do it yourselfers?

Can federal taxe returns still be filed jointly?

Re: Legal Division of Matital Assets

Yes, you can divide them without divorce, but the effect of division is limited (e.g. it does not protect one spouse from debts/liabilities of the other. You may want to consider filing for a separation. You do not need the services of an attorney to do this, but you may need the services of an attorney to do it effectively.
