Legal Question in Traffic Law in Washington

Diversion

I got a speeding ticket in Washington in August of 2007. At the time I lived in KS. I got a diversion for $100. They told me I wouldn't have to pay the fine if I went 1 year without another Violation. I did not get another violation. I moved to WI in August 2008. I thought it was done since I handn't heard anything. I just found out that they charged me $250 for the ticket and turned me into a collection agency because they sent me a notice that i didn't respond to. I never recieved any such notice. Is there anything I can do to take care of this without having to pay? Please let me know. I appreciate your help.

Re: Diversion

Assuming you were granted a "deferred finding", the $100 was likely imposed as court costs, and that amount was not a fine that was suspended.

If the court dismissed the infraction and referred the matter to collections, you're still better off than if the court found that the failure to comply with the order deferring findings, i.e. paying court costs, was a violation resulting in a finding that the infraction was committed.
