I want to change the executor of my will do I need to see a lawyer, I was told to cross out the old name and write in the new name sign it and have a witness and that would be ok

I would advocate that you do a codicil, i.e. a separate document that amends the will as to the specific provision, and should be handled with the same formalities as a will. You should follow all the formalities, this is something that if it is a problem in probate, you can't fix. Any document subject to any question invites probate litigation.
